Ilya Repin

Ilya Repin was a Ukrainian-born Russian painter who lived from 1844 to 1930 and became one of the most renowned artists in Russia during the nineteenth century. His major works include Barge Haulers on the Volga and Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, and he painted revealing portraits of leading Russian cultural figures of his time, including a long series of Leo Tolstoy. He trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg and later built a country estate in Finland called the Penates, now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
