Doni Tondo

The Doni Tondo, also called the Doni Madonna, is the only finished panel painting by the mature Michelangelo to survive, held today in the Uffizi in Florence in its original frame. It was commissioned by Agnolo Doni, probably to mark his marriage to Maddalena Strozzi of a powerful Tuscan family, and takes the circular tondo format long associated in the Renaissance with domestic subjects. The composition shows the Holy Family, the child Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in the foreground, John the Baptist in the middle ground, and five nude male figures in the background whose meaning has been interpreted in a variety of ways.
