Christ of Saint John of the Cross

Christ of Saint John of the Cross is a 1951 painting by Salvador Dali, held in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. It depicts Jesus Christ on the cross suspended in a darkened sky above a body of water, with a boat and fishermen visible below. Unlike traditional crucifixion imagery, the painting omits nails, blood and a crown of thorns, because Dali said a dream convinced him these details would mar his depiction of Christ. Dali also said a dream revealed to him the importance of showing Christ from the extreme high angle used in the composition.
