Joseph the Carpenter

Joseph the Carpenter is an oil on canvas painting by the French artist Georges de La Tour, made around 1642. It shows the young Jesus holding a candle to light the work of his earthly father Joseph, who is boring a hole in a piece of wood with an auger, an object read as a foreshadowing of the cross. Painted in the tenebrist manner characteristic of La Tour, with a single candle flame as the only light source casting deep shadows across the two figures, the work measures about 130 by 100 centimetres and is held in the Louvre in Paris.
