Spirit of the Dead Watching

Spirit of the Dead Watching (Manao tupapau) is an 1892 oil painting on burlap-textured canvas by Paul Gauguin, showing a nude young Tahitian woman lying face down on a bed while an old woman sits behind her. Gauguin said the title could describe either the girl imagining a watching spirit of the dead, or the spirit itself imagining her. The painting measures about 116 by 135 centimeters and is now held at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum in Buffalo, New York.
