Triptych of the Temptation of St. Anthony

The Triptych of the Temptation of Saint Anthony is an oil on panel triptych painted by Hieronymus Bosch around 1501, now in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon. Its central panel, flanked by two hinged wing panels, shows the torments and demonic temptations endured by Anthony the Great, the third century Desert Father, rendered in Bosch characteristic fantastical and grotesque imagery. The work was likely acquired by the Portuguese humanist Damiao de Gois sometime between 1523 and 1545, later entered the Portuguese royal collections, and was donated to the museum in 1911. Its enduring influence is reflected in the number of period copies and later versions of the composition that survive in museums worldwide.
