Our Lady of the Don

An Eleusa-type icon of the Virgin Mary and the infant Christ, traditionally attributed to Theophanes the Greek and dated to roughly 1382 to 1395. A 1692 monastery donation book records a tradition that Don Cossacks gave the icon to Prince Dmitry Donskoy before the 1380 Battle of Kulikovo, though some scholars treat that account as folklore rather than history. The icon was held in the Tretyakov Gallery from 1930, and on April 3, 2026 it was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church for a 49-year period; it is now displayed at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, with the Donskoy Monastery remaining its principal shrine.
