Delivery of the Keys

Delivery of the Keys, also known as Christ Giving the Keys to Saint Peter, is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance painter Pietro Perugino, produced between 1481 and 1482. It depicts the biblical episode in which Christ hands the keys of the kingdom of heaven to Saint Peter, surrounded by the other apostles and a crowd of contemporary onlookers, set against a wide piazza with a domed building modeled on ideas of the Temple of Jerusalem. The fresco is located in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, painted as part of a cycle illustrating parallel scenes from the lives of Moses and Christ commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV.
