Santa Trinita Maestà

A tempera-on-panel altarpiece by the Italian medieval painter Cimabue, dated to around 1290 to 1300, showing the Virgin Mary enthroned with the Christ Child, attended by eight angels and, in a lower register, four Old Testament prophets. It was painted for the church of Santa Trinita in Florence, where it remained until 1471, and now hangs in the Uffizi Gallery. The panel is notable for its frontal rendering of the throne, a departure from Cimabue's earlier Maestà compositions, and for the prophets' scrolls, which quote verses read as foretelling the Virgin Birth, fitting for a church dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
