The Sistine Chapel ceiling is a fresco cycle painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512 on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, commissioned by Pope Julius II. Its central panels depict scenes from the Book of Genesis, including the widely reproduced Creation of Adam, and the whole cycle is regarded as one of the High Renaissance's defining achievements in painting, made by an artist who considered himself first a sculptor.
