Testament and Death of Moses

Testament and Death of Moses is a fresco completed around 1482 by the Italian painters Luca Signorelli and Bartolomeo della Gatta, part of the fifteenth-century fresco cycle on the side walls of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. It combines several episodes from the final chapter of Moses's life in one composition: an angel showing Moses the Promised Land from Mount Nebo, his descent from the mountain, his address to the Israelites at the age of a hundred and twenty, the appointment of Joshua as his successor, and his death mourned by the Israelites. Moses is identified throughout by his yellow robe and green cloak, and the fresco includes symbolic details such as the Ark of the Covenant with the tablets of the law and a jar of manna.
