Annunciation is a painting of the biblical scene in which the angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will conceive and bear a son named Jesus. It was made around 1472 to 1476 in oil and tempera on a poplar panel, measuring about 98 by 217 centimeters, and is considered Leonardo da Vinci's earliest surviving major work, completed while he was apprenticed in Andrea del Verrocchio's workshop in Florence. It is among the best known depictions of the Annunciation in Christian art, though it has drawn criticism over the years for some compositional inaccuracies. It has been held at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence since 1867.
