The Assumption of the Virgin is a fresco painted between 1526 and 1530 by the Italian artist Antonio da Correggio in the dome of Parma Cathedral. It shows the Virgin Mary rising into heaven surrounded by ranks of musical angels, with Christ descending to meet her at the centre of the dome and the twelve apostles gathered, apparently bewildered, around the base of the scene, while blessed figures including Adam, Eve and Judith appear among the clouds. Measuring more than ten metres across, the illusionistic handling of space in the fresco, seeming to open the dome onto the sky itself, was highly influential on the ceiling painting of the Baroque period that followed.
