Primavera (Botticelli)

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Primavera is a large tempera panel painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli, made in the late 1470s or early 1480s and depicting a group of figures from classical mythology gathered in a garden. Although no single ancient story accounts for the full grouping, most critics read the painting as an allegory of spring connected to the Renaissance Neoplatonism fashionable in Florentine intellectual circles, drawing on classical and Renaissance literary sources including Ovid. It may have been commissioned by a member of the Medici family, has been part of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence since 1919, and is discussed alongside Botticelli's other large mythological panel, The Birth of Venus, as one of the icons of the Italian Renaissance.
