Vision of St. John on Patmos

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

The Vision of St. John the Evangelist at Patmos is a fresco cycle painted between 1520 and 1522 by the Italian Renaissance artist Antonio da Correggio in the dome and pendentives of the church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma, Italy. It depicts the apostle John's visionary experience described in the Book of Revelation, using an illusionistic composition of concentric cloud rings from which apostles emerge as Christ descends toward the nave in radiant light. The pendentives pair the four Evangelists with the four Doctors of the Church, Jerome, Ambrose, Gregory and Augustine.
