The Apotheosis of Washington is a fresco painted by the Greek-Italian artist Constantino Brumidi in 1865, filling the underside of the dome above the rotunda of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. It shows George Washington seated among clouds and classical deities, surrounded by thirteen maidens representing the original states and allegorical groupings of War, Science, Marine, Commerce, Mechanics, and Agriculture. The fresco covers about 4,664 square feet some 180 feet above the rotunda floor, with figures as tall as 15 feet, and Brumidi completed it in eleven months near the end of the Civil War for a fee of 40,000 dollars.
