The Sources of Music and The Triumph of Music

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

The Sources of Music and The Triumph of Music are a pair of murals that the Russian-French artist Marc Chagall painted in 1966 for the lobby of the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in New York City, following his set and costume designs for the opera''s inaugural production of Mozart''s The Magic Flute. Each mural measures roughly thirty by thirty six feet and is visible from the plaza outside the building; The Triumph of Music hangs on the south wall and The Sources of Music on the north wall, the reverse of the arrangement Chagall had originally intended. The Triumph of Music includes a depiction of the Metropolitan Opera''s director Rudolf Bing playing a mandolin, and shows the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart flying above Manhattan among characters from The Magic Flute.
