Danaë (Klimt)

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Danaë (Klimt) is an oil painting from 1907 by the Austrian Symbolist Gustav Klimt, depicting the mythological princess Danaë, whom her father King Acrisius of Argos imprisoned in a bronze tower. Klimt shows her curled asleep and draped in royal purple as a stream of gold, representing Zeus visiting her as golden rain, flows between her legs; in the myth she conceives Perseus, later the slayer of Medusa, from this union. The painting hung in Vienna's Galerie Wurthle until that gallery closed in 1995 and is now held privately by the children of Hans Dichand.
