Jupiter and Antiope (Watteau)

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Jupiter and Antiope, also known as Satyr and the Sleeping Nymph, is an oval oil painting by the French artist Antoine Watteau, made probably between 1714 and 1719 and measuring about 107.5 by 73 centimeters. It depicts the mythological scene of Jupiter, disguised as a satyr, standing over the sleeping nymph Antiope, who lies naked in the foreground. The painting was created as an overdoor, intended to be placed above a doorway. It is held at the Musee du Louvre in Paris.
