The Feast of the Gods (van Bijlert)

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

The Feast of the Gods is an oil on canvas painting by the Dutch artist Jan van Bijlert, created around 1635 to 1640, depicting the mythological wedding banquet of the nereid Thetis and Peleus, king of Phthia. The canvas gathers numerous Greco-Roman deities, including Apollo, Minerva, Diana, Mars, Venus, Cupid, Flora, Hercules, Neptune, Eris and Bacchus alongside a dancing satyr, treating a subject painted by many Western artists. The left portion of the canvas has been lost, which accounts for the absence of certain figures, though the goddess Juno's peacock remains visible where she once stood. The painting now hangs in the Musee Magnin in Dijon, France, having become French state property through the 1938 bequest of the collector Maurice Magnin.
