Paradise of Bhaisajyaguru

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Paradise of Bhaisajyaguru, also called Pure Land of Bhaisajyaguru, is a large Chinese Buddhist wall painting from the Yuan dynasty, dated to about 1319, showing the Medicine Buddha surrounded by bodhisattvas and celestial attendants in an imagined heavenly realm. It was made in dry fresco technique, with water based pigment on a clay and straw ground, and originally decorated the Guangsheng Lower Monastery in Zhaocheng County, Shanxi province. Its full-faced, robust figure style has led some scholars to connect it to the fourteenth century painter Zhu Haogu, though the artist is not firmly identified. The mural measures roughly 7.5 by 15 meters and was acquired by the collector Arthur M. Sackler, who donated it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1954.
