Cable Street Mural

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

The Cable Street Mural is a large mural painted on the side of St George's Town Hall on Cable Street in London's Tower Hamlets, completed by artists Dave Binnington, Paul Butler, Ray Walker and Desmond Rochfort and unveiled in May 1983. Measuring about fifteen by twenty meters, it commemorates the 1936 Battle of Cable Street, when roughly 250,000 East London residents blocked a march by Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists. Painted in a social-realist style influenced by Diego Rivera and Depression-era muralists, it uses a fisheye perspective to show mounted police clashing with protesters amid overturned vehicles, barricades and banners, with a police autogyro overhead.
