The murals from the Christian temple at Qocho are three fresco fragments, titled Palm Sunday, Repentance and Entry into Jerusalem, made for a Church of the East Christian building at Qocho, an ancient oasis city in what is now Xinjiang, China, and dated to between the seventh and ninth centuries. They were uncovered in the early twentieth century by the German Turpan expeditions led by Albert Grunwedel and Albert von Le Coq and are now held in the Museum of Asian Art in Berlin. The Palm Sunday fragment shows a censer-bearing figure with three worshippers carrying palm branches, one of them dressed in Tang-dynasty style clothing; the Repentance fragment shows a young woman in a brown robe with folded hands; and the Entry into Jerusalem, which does not survive as a painted fragment, is known only from a line drawing Grunwedel made of a bearded figure riding a donkey and holding a processional cross. Together the three fragments are rare surviving evidence of Church of the East Christianity in medieval Central Asia and of the blending of Near Eastern and Chinese pictorial traditions along the Silk Road.
