Our Lady of Perpetual Help

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a Byzantine-style icon of the Virgin Mary, likely painted in Crete between 1325 and 1480 in tempera on a walnut wood panel with a gold leaf background. The image was kept in the church of San Matteo in Via Merulana in Rome from 1499 to 1798 and now hangs permanently in the church of Saint Alphonsus Liguori on the Esquiline Hill, where a weekly novena is still prayed before it. Pope Pius IX granted it a formal title and had it canonically crowned in 1867, and the Redemptorist order has held custody of the image since. In Eastern Orthodox tradition the same type of icon is known as the Virgin of the Passion.
