Altarpiece of the Holy Sacrament

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

The Altarpiece of the Holy Sacrament, also called the Triptych of the Last Supper, is a folding altarpiece of at least five panels painted between 1464 and 1468 by the Early Netherlandish artist Dieric Bouts for the Church of St Peter in Leuven, Belgium, where it remains today in the eastern choir chapel. Its central panel shows the Last Supper, flanked by four smaller panels depicting Old Testament scenes traditionally read as prefiguring it: the Passover feast, Elijah fed in the wilderness, the meeting of Abraham with Melchizedek, and the gathering of manna. Commissioned by the Leuven Confraternity of the Holy Sacrament, the work is considered the masterpiece of Bouts for its sophisticated linear perspective and its combination of everyday domestic detail with religious symbolism; its panels range from about 88 to 183 centimetres in height.
