Bathsheba at Her Bath (Rembrandt)

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Bathsheba at Her Bath, also known as Bathsheba with King David's Letter, is an oil painting by the Dutch artist Rembrandt, finished in 1654. It depicts a moment from the Old Testament story in 2 Samuel 11, in which King David sees Bathsheba bathing and, entranced, sends for her, later ordering her husband abandoned in battle to conceal the affair. Rembrandt's treatment differs from earlier depictions of the same story in its tight focus on Bathsheba herself, achieved through broad, thick brushwork and vivid color. The painting hangs in the Louvre, one of 583 works given to the museum by Dr. Louis La Caze in 1869; the critic Kenneth Clark called it Rembrandt's greatest painting of the nude.
