The Surrender of Breda, known in Spanish as La rendicion de Breda, is a painting by the Spanish Golden Age painter Diego Velazquez, completed between 1634 and 1635. Velazquez was inspired by his travels in Italy alongside Ambrogio Spinola, the Genoese-born Spanish general who had captured the Dutch city of Breda on June 5, 1625. The painting depicts the ceremonial exchange of the city's key from the defeated Dutch commander to Spinola, commemorating the Spanish victory during the Eighty Years' War.
