Kullervo Sets Off for War

Kullervo Sets Off for War is an 1901 work by the Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela, made in two versions, a tempera painting of 89 by 128 centimeters held at the Ateneum in Helsinki and a much larger fresco in the music hall of the Old Student House at the University of Helsinki. It illustrates an episode from the Finnish national epic the Kalevala, showing the tragic hero Kullervo mounted on a white horse and setting out for battle to take revenge on his uncle Untamo, accompanied by a dog or wolf.
