Landscapes and Still Lifes

Paintings whose primary subject is the natural or built environment for its own sake, or an arrangement of inanimate objects, the two genres the classical hierarchy of painting groups together as the lesser genres beneath history painting and portraiture, and which the Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus lists as distinct subject-type facets. Belongs here: pure landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, and still life arrangements of flowers, fruit or objects with no human narrative. Does not belong here: a scene with a landscape setting whose real subject is a narrative or a figure, which belongs under Genre Scenes, Religious and Mythological Paintings or History and Political Paintings instead.
