A German Requiem

Musical Compositions

A German Requiem, to Words of the Holy Scriptures, Op. 45, is a large-scale work for chorus, orchestra and soprano and baritone soloists composed by Johannes Brahms between 1865 and 1868. It comprises seven movements that together last sixty five to eighty minutes, making it both Brahms's longest composition and his largest work for ensemble. Unlike the long tradition of the Latin Requiem Mass, A German Requiem is sacred but non-liturgical and is set, as its title states, in the German language rather than Latin.
