Expressionist Painters

Painters of Expressionism, the movement, strongest in early twentieth century Germany and Austria, that distorted color, form and composition to convey subjective emotion rather than observed appearance, including German Expressionist groups such as Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter and later Expressionist and Neo-Expressionist painters working in the same emotionally distorted, subjective vein. This group excludes Fauvism, a closely related but separately named movement gathered under Fauvist Painters, and excludes Abstract Expressionism, the distinct postwar American movement gathered under Abstract Expressionist Painters.
