Frans Hals was a Dutch Golden Age painter who lived from about 1582 to 1666, based for his career in the city of Haarlem. He was highly sought after by wealthy citizens for individual, married-couple, family and institutional group portraits, and also painted informal character studies known as tronies for the open market. His portraits are known for a loose, painterly technique and lively, animated expressions, in contrast to the neater style of other Haarlem portraitists of his generation.
