Realist Painters

Painters of the nineteenth century Realism movement and its close national variants, who rejected the idealization of Romanticism and Neoclassicism in favor of everyday subjects, ordinary people and unembellished observation, including the movement's French founders and the closely related Russian Peredvizhniki and American realist traditions that followed the same principle into the early twentieth century. This group excludes painters whose work is merely described as lifelike or naturalistic without an explicit tie to the Realism movement itself, who belong instead by their own period and style under Renaissance, Baroque, Romanticism and Neoclassicism, or a Modernist group as appropriate.
