Do Quang Em

Do Quang Em was a Vietnamese painter, born in Ninh Thuan province in 1942, who trained at the Gia Dinh College of Fine Arts, graduating in 1965, and was based in Saigon, later Ho Chi Minh City. He became a notable figure among Vietnamese artists who, from the early 1980s, rebelled against what was perceived as the superficiality, lack of personality and dogmatic formulas of mainstream art, after a period spent in a re-education camp. From 1994 he exhibited primarily internationally, particularly in Hong Kong, and his work gained wide recognition, including a piece acquired by former United States President Bill Clinton during a 1997 visit to Vietnam.
