Fernando Botero

Painters

Fernando Botero was a Colombian painter and sculptor known internationally for his distinctive figurative style, often called Boterismo, in which human figures, animals, and everyday objects are rendered with exaggerated, rounded volume and inflated proportions. Working across still life, portraiture, and scenes of Colombian daily and political life, Botero used this signature form of stylized corpulence both for satirical and humorous effect and, in later series addressing subjects such as violence in Colombia and abuses at Abu Ghraib prison, for pointed political commentary. His monumental bronze sculptures in the same rounded idiom have been installed as public art in cities across the Americas and Europe, making him one of the most widely exhibited Latin American artists of his generation.
