Bashir Mirza

Bashir Mirza (1941-2000), known as BM, was a Pakistani painter born in Amritsar who trained under Shakir Ali at the Mayo School of Arts in Lahore, graduating in 1962 in the first class of the renamed National College of Arts. His career, which ran from the mid-1960s until his death in 2000, moved freely between realist, abstract and non-objective styles rather than settling into a single manner. He founded Karachi first independent art gallery in 1965 and the art journal Artistic Pakistan, designed postage stamps for Pakistan, and received the country Pride of Performance award in 1994 for his contribution to the arts.
