Stephen Kappata

Stephen Chipango Kappata was a Zambian painter who lived from 1936 to 2007, born in the Barotseland Protectorate to parents who had fled Angola during World War I. He began painting around 1970 after meeting an artist who sold depictions of Victoria Falls to tourists, and his naive style, marked by brilliant colors, a flattened picture plane and profile figures, addressed Zambian culture, colonialism and contemporary social issues; his paintings are held by the National Museum of African Art and Glasgow Life Museums.
