Tshibumba Kanda-Matulu was a painter from Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, born in Elisabethville, now Lubumbashi, in 1947, and believed to have been killed in rioting after he disappeared in 1981. Working in the tradition of Congolese popular history painting, he is best known for a series of 101 paintings made between 1974 and 1976 at the request of the anthropologist Johannes Fabian, illustrating how ordinary Congolese people remembered their nation's history. That collaboration produced the 1996 book Remembering the Present: Painting and Popular History in Zaire, and his paintings are valued both for the view of collective memory they preserve and for the political commentary embedded within them.
