Bernardino Mei

Bernardino Mei was an Italian painter and engraver, born in Siena on 23 October 1612 and died in Rome in 1676, who worked in a Baroque manner in both cities and found his chief patronage with the Chigi family. He trained under the cartographer Giuliano Periccioli and the painter Rutilio Manetti, and from the 1650s produced mature works marked by complex rhythms and forms and considerable expressive power, influenced by Roman painting and by the sculpture of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. In 1657 Pope Alexander VII summoned him to Rome, where he was elected to the Accademia di San Luca the same year, and he remained in the city until his death.
