Duccio di Buoninsegna (c. 1255/1260-c. 1318/1319) was an Italian painter active in Siena, considered one of the greatest Italian painters of the Middle Ages. He is credited with founding the Sienese school of painting and shaping the Trecento Gothic style. His two best documented works are the Rucellai Madonna, painted in 1285, and the Maesta, a large altarpiece completed for Siena Cathedral between 1308 and 1311.
