Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) was an Italian Jesuit missionary and painter who served as a court artist to three Qing emperors in Beijing. He developed a distinctive style fusing European and Chinese painting traditions, seen in works such as One Hundred Horses in a Landscape and Four Afghan Steeds, and he also contributed to the architectural design of the Old Summer Palace and helped introduce Western perspective technique to Chinese art through a collaborative publication on the subject.
