Giuseppe Vermiglio

Giuseppe Vermiglio was a Caravaggist painter from Northern Italy, probably born in Alessandria around 1585, who was also active in Rome. Little is documented of his early life; he spent the first two decades of the 1600s in Rome, training as a painter amid a turbulent life marked by conflicts with fellow painters and run ins with the authorities. Around 1620 he relocated to Piedmont and Lombardy, working in Novara, Alessandria, Mantua and Milan, and his style, shaped by Caravaggio, also shows connections to Bolognese painters such as Annibale Carracci and Guido Reni. The art historian Luigi Lanzi called him the best painter in oils that the old state of Piedmont could boast. He died around 1635.
