Ivan Aivazovsky

Ivan Aivazovsky was a Russian Romantic painter of Armenian descent who lived from 1817 to 1900 and is considered one of the greatest masters of marine art. Born in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea, he trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg and was later appointed the main painter of the Russian Navy. Over an almost sixty-year career he produced around six thousand paintings, the vast majority seascapes, making him one of the most prolific artists of his time.
