Jacopo Torriti

Jacopo Torriti, sometimes spelled Turriti, was an Italian painter and mosaic maker active in Rome in the late thirteenth century. Working with the Franciscan friar Jacopo da Camerino, he signed the apse mosaic of the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano in 1291 and went on to create the celebrated apse mosaic of the Coronation of the Virgin at Santa Maria Maggiore in 1295. No written documents survive to reconstruct his biography, and his other attributed work, including possible frescoes at the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi and the Abbey of Tre Fontane, rests on stylistic grounds rather than record. His surviving mosaics at Santa Maria Maggiore remain among the best preserved examples of Roman monumental decoration from the period.
