John Rogers Herbert

Painters

John Rogers Herbert was an English painter, born on 23 January 1810 and died on 17 March 1890, who became a Royal Academician. He is remembered chiefly as a precursor of Pre-Raphaelitism: his religious and historical paintings, including The First Introduction of Christianity into Great Britain of 1842 and Our Saviour Subject to His Parents at Nazareth of 1847, directly influenced the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, to the point that members of the Brotherhood spoke of wanting to out-Herbert Herbert. He became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1841 and a full Academician in 1846.
