Luis Desangles

Luis Desangles Lubiles (1861-1940) was a Dominican painter, sculptor and educator born in Santo Domingo, regarded as one of the founding figures of Dominican national art. His work spanned portraits of political leaders, religious subjects, historical scenes, landscapes and still life, and he trained a generation of Dominican artists through his own studio workshop. Exiled in 1893 by the dictator Ulises Heureaux after students in his circle produced politically inflammatory artwork, he settled in Cuba, where he painted notable cathedral murals and taught at provincial academies until his death from complications of diabetes at age seventy nine.
