Matthäus Günther

Matthäus Günther (1705-1788) was a German painter of the Baroque and Rococo period, born in Peissenberg and trained in Munich under Cosmas Damian Asam before refining his fresco technique in Augsburg. He became one of the leading fresco painters of the Bavarian and Tyrolean Rococo, completing decoration in more than forty churches with roughly seventy frescoes and twenty-five panel paintings marked by lifelike figures and vivid color. He often collaborated with the architect Johann Michael Fischer and with plasterers of the Feuchtmayer family, and he spent his final years near Wessobrunn, where he died in 1788.
