Gustaf Olof (Olle) Hjortzberg (1872-1959) was a Swedish painter and illustrator, born in Stockholm and trained at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts from 1892, whose travels through Italy and the Middle East shaped a lasting interest in Byzantine and Assyrian art. Returning to Sweden in 1905, he devoted much of his career to reviving mural painting in Swedish churches, producing stained glass, ceiling decoration and murals for Katarina Church, Klara Church and Uppenbarelsekyrkan among others. Alongside his church commissions he worked as an illustrator of biblical publications, designed Olympic posters and postage stamps, and served as an instructor and later director at the Academy of Fine Arts.
