Simon Vouet (1590-1649) was a French painter based in Paris, described as indisputably the leading artist in the city during his lifetime and credited with introducing Italian Baroque painting to France. He served as Premier peintre du Roi, first painter to the king, under Louis XIII, producing religious and mythological paintings, portraits, frescoes, tapestry designs and large decorative schemes for royal and wealthy patrons, including Cardinal Richelieu, and he was also recognized as one of the outstanding French draftsmen of the seventeenth century.
