Tommaso Laureti

Tommaso Laureti, called Tommaso Laureti Siciliano, was a Sicilian painter born in Palermo around 1530 and died on 22 September 1602. Trained under the aging Sebastiano del Piombo, he worked first in Bologna, where he introduced ceiling paintings with illusionistic perspective, designing the base of Giambologna's Neptune Fountain, completed in 1566. From 1582 he worked in Rome for papal patrons in a style drawing on Michelangelo, largely setting aside Mannerism, and produced major fresco cycles including the Triumph of the Christian Religion ceiling in the Sala di Costantino, begun in 1582, and scenes of Roman history in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, painted between 1587 and 1594. From 1595 he served as the second director of Rome's Accademia di San Luca.
